Rhythm and Form brings together the work of four artists from different generations, Jen Aitken, Joachim Bandau, Ric Evans, and Landon Mackenzie, whose practices all revolve around their relationship to space and abstraction. Working across an array of mediums and scales, these four artists are united by their relationship to the way line and colour intertwine to form shape and denote volume.

Jen Aitken makes sculptures that strike a fine balance between perceptual ambiguity and structural clarity. Aitken deliberately draws attention to the spaces she leaves hollow in her works, allowing them to become charged spaces that force viewers to become aware of their bodies in relation to the work. Speaking of her sculptural work, Aitken says that she attempts to make "emptiness feel full."

Working with minimalist shapes and a restrained colour palette, Joachim Bandau applies his materials in unexpected and non-traditional ways. His precisely controlled and multi-layered watercolours take months, sometimes years, to complete as each layer must be carefully applied across a dry surface. Each of the resulting paintings contains its own movement and rhythm that depends on the direction and depth of the layering process. Music, specifically classical, is one of Bandau’s primary influences for his black and white watercolour series.

Ric Evans describes his practice as “orbital”, continuously referencing a central idea while bringing new observations and considerations to his work. Form and colour are combined in unique and playful combinations that highlight his approach of “informed intuition” inspired by his experiences and the natural world.

In 2024, Landon Mackenzie embarked on a month-long residency in Oaxaca, Southern Mexico. The resulting body of work, Oaxaca Folio, is a vibrant exploration of the colour, texture, and spirit of the town articulated through Mackenzie’s iconic pictorial language. Oaxaca Folio can be seen as a continuation of Mackenzie's 2023 Sayulita Suite, created in a charming fishing and surfing town on the west coast of Mexico in 2023.
