May 24 - June 16, 2012

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 24, 2012, 6 – 8 PM

Nicholas Metivier Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by artist David Shapiro. The exhibition will open on Thursday, May 24 and will be on view through June 16 with a reception for the artist on Thursday, May 24 from 6– 8 PM. This will be Shapiro’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery.

New York-based and internationally recognized artist David Shapiro has just completed one of his most prolific bodies of works on paper in recent years. This exhibition of editions and unique works on paper is a representation of some of his recent projects in this medium.

Shapiro has been making prints since 1978 and is known for his delicate handmade papers and texturally varied compositions. In a single work, Shapiro may combine many different printing techniques such as intaglio, lithography, etching and collagraph. The new editions were printed at Ribuoli Digital & Wiporcus in New York and Wildwood Press in St. Louis, Missouri.

The exhibition will also include unique works on paper. Shapiro has collected and stored papers from all over the world, waiting for the right project to enlist them. For instance, Shapiro has used a rare, heavyweight Japanese hanga paper as a stunning backdrop for some of his recent Origin & Return paintings. Other works are painted on exquisite handmade papers with heavily decaled edges.

David Shapiro’s works are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
