• Our current exhibition, Land and Form, features some of Canada's preeminent painters and photographers. We invited Edward Burtynsky and John Hartman to discuss the ways in which photography is informed by painting and painting is informed by photography in a talk moderated by Ian Brown. Listen to the talk by clicking the play button below, and scroll through to see installation views, action shots, and sneak peeks into the private collections of both artists.

"We had gone to Boot Island for a picnic a couple of years ago and there was a big storm coming in. I looked at it and watched where it was moving and told everybody: "We're fine, it's not going to hit us." Ten minutes later, it slammed into us: hail, wind, rain. Everybody had to scatter. Some people tried to hide under a blue tarp, the fire was blown out, our food was spread all over the place."

John Hartman: "Did you take the door off? One time I rented a Cessna out of Parry Sound from a bunch of young guys. They took the door off and took out a roll of duct tape and taped me to the seat. Just in case."

  • "I am curious about the places I paint and about their history. In 2001 I began to search for historical photographic images of Georgian Bay and Newfoundland. To my delight I discovered that the settlement of these places, and much of Canada as well, was recorded in photographs from the 1860’s onward. I began to collect these vintage photos somewhat obsessively, then very obsessively."
