"I have been fascinated with the process of printmaking since my undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta where there was a world-class printmaking department. It has been a consistent thread throughout my artistic practice, often informing the mark-making and material approaches I investigate in my paintings."

THE BATH SUITE
-
"The Bath Suite was developed while in residency at the Bath Artist Printmakers in the UK, after I received the Joseph Plaskett Prize in 2021. During this residency, I experimented with a particular printmaking technique called spitbite. Acid is painted directly onto the copper plate as opposed to the plate being dipped in an acid bath which allows for softness in the tonal ranges. It creates less precise marks, leading to more ambiguous imagery. The subjects of the etchings are composites of garden sites and structures that I was drawn to while visiting National Trust gardens in the UK as part of my research into gardens as sites for communal gathering. Formally, I was influenced by the work of the British artist, Norman Ackroyd, whose mastery of the spitbite technique led to etchings that were soft and haze-like, evoking the effects of weather and vast space. I was also looking closely at the watercolours of JMW Turner."

A CHAIR OUTSIDE
-
"A Chair Outside is a collection of seven etchings utilizing soft-ground etching, aquatint, and sugar-lift, to create compositions with a dynamic range of mark-making that relate to my concurrent paintings. The subjects come from my personal collection of photographs of gardens in Edmonton and Guelph, the two cities I lived in during the development of the plates. From the exterior of the family housing unit where I lived in Guelph to the fish pond in my friend Sylvia's garden, each etching depicts a garden space that I was intimately familiar with and where I had experienced a sense of solace. In utilizing multiple printmaking techniques for this project, my aim was to imbue the images with a sense of changeability and contingency, as if the etchings were held in a state of coming into being."

"I keep myself open to being surprised by an experience of beauty. Often this manifests through an unusual arrangement of colors or objects in a garden that seem a bit out of place and hold a sense of mystery. I'm also drawn to private garden spaces that seem approachable in the sense that they are cared for but not perfect."
