WATCH | THE EXHIBITION WALKTHROUGH
Nicholas Metivier Gallery is pleased to present a selection of new works by Edward Burtynsky and Sebastião Salgado, on view from November 4 - 27, 2021. Longtime friends and colleagues, these two internationally renowned artists have just released exciting new photographs from their most recent series.
Edward Burtynsky's project on the subject of Africa is scheduled for worldwide release in the fall of 2022. With Africa, the last of the continents to experience rapid industrialization, Burtynsky is once again at the forefront of documenting its historic transition. Burtynsky has expanded his use of the aerial perspective while drawing us in with arresting abstraction, colour and scale.
Sebastião Salgado's new series, Amazônia, captures the incredible natural diversity of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and its inhabitants' ways of life. Over the course of six years, Salgado settled for several weeks at a time in specific villages and photographed a dozen indigenous tribes. In small boats or from the air, Salgado also captured the surrounding landscape. These images reveal complex labyrinths formed by the winding tributaries that feed the river, mountains reaching up to 3,000 meters and waterlogged skies.
Included with the release of the Amazônia photographs is a new book, published by Taschen, which is available through the gallery.
