• Nicholas Metivier Gallery is honoured to present an exhibition of drawings and paintings by the late Tony Scherman, on view September 19th through October 9th. While Tony Scherman was renowned for his encaustic paintings, an immensely important facet of his practice were his drawings. When making his drawings, Scherman relinquished control over conscious thought, his hand and eye moved together in synchronicity and in ways beyond reason and rationale.

    "Tony Scherman established much of his subject matter early on, with the exception of landscapes. He took note of Tuscan and French landscapes while travelling. These first appeared the mid-1980s as settings for figure paintings and their sub-plots; later as landscapes alone. The untitled Ontario cottage country work may come as a surprise to those familiar with Scherman's oeuvre, but he did a number of these works on paper in eastern Georgian Bay. In contrast to the 'rugged' wilderness of the Group of Seven, Scherman's composition has a sense of tranquility, the rowboat in the water with an edge of autumnal trees; the artist in the moment."

    "Conversations with the Devil is a series of flowers that are cut. When a flower is cut, it not only becomes a sign signifying love, the hearth, death, but becomes sacred in its assignation. The conversation with the devil is the conversation of going to a funeral, laying down some flowers and when everyone has left, picking up those flowers and taking them to a dinner party that night. Is this outrageous…or is it irrelevant? This is the conversation."

    TONY SCHERMAN

     

    Tony Scherman (1950 - 2023) grew up in Paris and London. In 1974, Scherman received an MA from the Royal College of Art in London and returned to Toronto in 1976. Scherman has had more than 100 solo exhibitions across Canada, in the United States and Europe. Collections include the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Montréal Museum of Fine Art; Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal; Centre Pompidou, Paris; High Museum, Atlanta and Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His solo exhibition Chasing Napoleon traveled to six American university museums between 2001 and 2002. Most recently in 2019, the survey exhibition, Heroes, Ghosts and Dreams, was presented at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
