"Tony Scherman was recognized and admired for his unmistakable approach to encaustic as a medium for painting, but the foundation of his work was drawing. It occupied much of his formative years and continued into his mature career.
Scherman noted that drawing was “an impulse to articulate things I see, but some have a thematic dimension to them, and I can put them in series or groups.” He also stated that he is “a desperate draughtsman and will do anything in the drawing to achieve a result.” This should not be misunderstood as ‘desperation,’ but rather a comment on his commitment to drawing. The basics can be taught but the mastery of drawing is a personal journey.
