In her latest exhibition of paintings Shelley Adler continues to explore the portrait, now including more of the figure in a loose, colourful interplay between subject and background. Balancing between image and abstract space, Adler demonstrates a Fauvist interest in flat shapes and non-representational colour. Similar to Morandi's works, these are not just recognizable pictures but paintings - eventually, our perception shifts away from identifying the image to enjoying the complex qualities of painting. A series of smaller watercolour studies showcase Adler's use of strong forms and graceful, gestural brushwork.
Shelley Adler lives in Toronto. Recent exhibitions include "The Figure" at Sarah Myerscough Gallery in London, UK and "Eat Drink Man Woman" at the Art Gallery of Mississauga.
