Matthew Schofield is fascinated by idiosyncratic everyday moments and captures compelling scenes using his phone's camera throughout the day. Later, in his studio, Schofield transforms these images into paintings by carefully selecting a scale that allows him to enhance key details in his chosen subject matter. Recently, Schofield has been exploring larger formats, which allow for more nuance and a looser approach to his brushstrokes. Schofield has a remarkable facility with paint and attends to light and colour with a studied subtlety. Where an original photograph often dilutes experiences into a singular moment, Schofield's paintings play upon a collective memory by capturing not only what we see, but how we see and process these everyday moments.

Matthew Schofield was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1973 and currently lives and works in Toronto. He has exhibited in Canada and internationally since 1996. His work has been shown in museums and commercial galleries in Canada, France, the United Kingdom and the United States.  In 2014, Schofield’s work was featured in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
