The Nicholas Metivier Gallery was founded in 2004 at 451 King Street West in Toronto by Nicholas Metivier. Prior to opening his own space, Metivier gained 22 years of experience in the art world. In 2018, the gallery relocated to 190 Richmond Street East in Toronto. Today, it is one of the largest contemporary galleries in Canada.

The focus of the gallery since its inception has been to exhibit, represent, and promote Canadian as well as international artists from different generations and working in a variety of mediums, that demonstrate exceptional quality and originality.

Gallery artists are included in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid; the Tate Modern, London; the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.

Nicholas Metivier served as a board member for Scotiabank's CONTACT Photography Festival between 2004 and 2015. The gallery became a member of the Association of International Photography Dealers (AIPAD) in 2016.
