Landon Mackenzie: The Moon is the Message

June 4 - July 4, 2020
  • Widely known for her large-scale canvases, Landon Mackenzie has worked on paper throughout her career having trained in printmaking. Although her works on paper relate to her larger paintings, they are  considered a “parallel practice” rather than studies. Mackenzie displays an awareness and sensitivity for the rare and delicate surfaces of the papers she collects.

One of the greatest influences for Mackenzie is travel. In 2018 and 2019, Mackenzie was invited to participate in three residencies, two in Tao Hua Tan, China and the other in Noja, Spain. While the foundation for the works she developed at the residencies was her particle motif, each series was inspired by the culture, colour and available artists materials she discovered in the respective cities.

The title for this exhibition, The Moon is the Message, is a play on Marshall McLuhan’s famous phrase, “the medium is the message”. One of the few constants when Mackenzie travels is the appearance of the moon. While abstract, her particle motif alludes to real life experiences and energies, including the first sighting of the moon.

  • Over the years I have been invited to work internationally at short intense residencies. Recently I worked in Tao Hua Tan (THT) in China, and on the north coast of Spain in a small town called Noja – not far from Bilbao.

I have also been a visiting professor to Beijing at the Central Academy of Fine Art (CAFA) - the largest public art school in China. In small streets near the school were many specialized art material merchants with various kinds of papers, inks and brushes. Not speaking the language it's impossible to know which would work for me, so I experimented. Near Tao Hua Tan I was able to go to the Red Star Paper Factory that has been making China's finest paper for 1000 years.

  • I started using watercolour in small booklets I found in a shop in Yokohama in the ‘90s that began something new. In a hotel room in the middle of the night in a foreign country, I made small abstract patterns and landscape motifs in these small rice paper books. I couldn’t turn the pages when wet, so I worked on multiple books, usually 3 in a session. The next night I would add to all the pages again. It marked time and helped me untangle so much stimuli. I started travelling with folders of other papers and made my own watercolour sets by squeezing out high end tube colours to have my unique palette that I pre dried in the window.

Striped Sky with Pink Dots, 2019

One is profoundly moved by seeing a full moon and especially a super moon, yet this image is forbidden as subject matter because it’s romantic, sentimental and corny. I experience a strong relationship to this force where ever I am: on the Cardigan River in PEI, across the Atlantic to the coast of Europe, or illuminating the rice fields in China. In it I carry my sense of home and my close relationships. As this pandemic influences the whole of Earth, it is the one common light we share.

    Neurotree, 2011, acrylic on linen, 82 1/2 x 114 in.

Neurotree, 2011, is the single canvas included in the exhibition. Mackenzie remembers this work as her first example of the Particle paintings. It also has a variety of linear elements that borrow from the patterns she often describes on paper.

  • You can’t over think a painting; the start of any work holds so much promise, immediate and intuitive. Big or small, I work in layers separating the intuitive from the analytical. I follow a line of logic for a bit and then switch to a different line. The works go from floor or table to the wall for a look and then back horizontally and then vertically again.
