On Paper | Part I: Group Exhibition

April 28 - May 30, 2020
  • The Nicholas Metivier Gallery has always demonstrated its commitment to and respect for works on paper. From exhibiting several solo exhibitions with a focus on paper to publishing prints with renowned Master Printers, we have celebrated the medium for its nuanced characteristics and versatility.

On Paper | Part I, brings together a unique selection of works on paper by various painters and sculptors who demonstrate the medium's importance in providing creative freedom and inspiration in their respective practices.

  • JOHN HARTMAN

"There are many joys being an artist, and holding a fine hand-made paper in my hands, imagining how it will be used, is certainly one of them. I am a dedicated printmaker, primarily making colour drypoints. Whether I am printing in my studio, or with Greg Burnet in New York, or Neils Borch Jensen in Copenhagen, the selection of the right paper for the project is always a key decision."

  • LANDON MACKENZIE

"What threw me as a younger artist was the idea that one should make preliminary drawings in pencil or charcoal on paper before starting a canvas. That never worked for me, even with my training in life drawing and printmaking. Instead, I make a parallel work on paper that runs alongside the large work.

Over the years I have been invited to work internationally at short, intense residencies. Exploring the side streets in some of these foreign places, I discovered many specialized art material merchants with various kinds of papers, inks and brushes. Not speaking the language, it was impossible to know which ones would work for me, so I experimented."

  • BEN REEVES

"Paper is perceived as a non-precious surface, relative to painting. It offers the freedom to work quickly, and take more and greater risks. If things don’t work out it is easy to simply discard (recycle) and start again.

There is no such thing as a neutral space, but in certain ways paper might come close - the literal “blank page.” I am excited by the humbleness of the surface in contrast to its unlimited potential. Paper is seemingly banal, yet its possibilities are boundless— it can encompass unexpected universes of new stories and ideas. Working on paper is a great space for me to play and experiment; to nourish, advance and stretch my thinking and practice."

  • MEDRIE MACPHEE

"Many of these current works on paper including 'Inchoate Encounter' {2019} are part of a series that I did while a fellow at the Bogliasco Foundation just south of Genoa, Italy last fall - before the unthinkable situation we are in now. The Ligurian coast is a visual mashup achieved through the architecture whose exteriors combine pastel colour, fresco, faux painting and especially trompe l’oiel. Fairly austere conjoined buildings become grand through their “fake” windows, bricks, arches, pilasters, balustrades around windows and doors. The limited palette  – strictly prescribed by public ordinance – animates each building within a harmonic order in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. In retrospect the joy I felt in opening my studio windows each morning to the dazzling sea below seems manifest in this work."

  • BOBBIE BURGERS

"Works on paper have been an integral part of my practice for the last few years. They range from simple charcoal sketches to heavily layered oil bar works. I treat paper as a place for experimentation, often starting several pieces at a time making quick, gestural “sketches” using thin paint, pastel and charcoal.

My works go in a circle now, ideas from paper flip onto canvas, and then I draw a sketch of the painting. These sometimes turn into collages, and with every reinterpretation, the works morph and become increasingly abstracted from the original concept."

  • STEPHEN APPLEBY-BARR

“Carving lines into copper, painting with acid, laying down delicate layers of dust to trap ink into even tones, rubbing the dust to modulate ink’s adherence to metal. It was alchemy and I loved it. Everything I had always loved about drawing exploded open into this process and here I was working with one of the last great printmakers. It was heaven.“
