  • GREG HARDY

    NORTHERN CATHEDRAL

    February 4 - 27, 2021

Northern Cathedral features new paintings from Greg Hardy's Lac La Ronge series. The area in northern Saskatchewan has been a source of great inspiration for Hardy for over a decade. He sketches from the vantage point of his kayak and canoe, carefully observing subtle changes in weather and how these affect the landscape around him. He revisits the sketches in his Saskatoon studio, allowing them to trigger his memory and interpret a specific moment using colour and light.

  • MICHAEL SMITH

    UNDERLAND

    March 4 - 27, 2021

Michael Smith's most recent series began following a trip to France where he revisited ancient cave sites that he had first seen in the 1970s. Unable to take photographs, Smith created watercolours and ultimately paintings that evoke the sublime experience of being underground. Smith's ongoing fascination with the intersection of landscape and time is fully realized in these works. Their impastoed surfaces and subtle glazes describe a place that is in perpetual motion.

  • MATTHEW SCHOFIELD

    A SUM OF ITS PARTS

    March 4 - 27, 2021

For A Sum of Its Parts, Matthew Schofield curated small groups of his own photographs, taken with various cameras over many years, and meticulously painted them in a 1-1 scale. While the groupings are idiosyncratic, together they imply an intriguing narrative that is left to the viewer to unravel.

In addition to the multi-panel works are individual paintings, also selected from Schofield's personal archive of photographs. Their slightly enlarged scale highlights the nuances of his painted surfaces, in particular the attention to detail and colour.

  • MEDRIE MACPHEE

    APRIL 1 - 24, 2021

Medrie MacPhee's first solo exhibition at the gallery will include paintings and works on paper from her recent series that focuses on colour, texture and form. A monumental shift occurred in MacPhee's practice several years ago when she began to adhere clothing to her canvases. She arranges the pieces of fabric and occasional zipper or button to create a "scaffolding" that when covered in gesso, resembles a low-relief grid. She then responds to the surface using an intuitive and informed approach to colour. While abstract, the paintings subtly reference the human body in powerful and engaging ways.

    APRIL 1 - 24, 2021

James Carl's first exhibition at the gallery will include new marble sculptures from his POM bottle series as well as a selection of works on paper. His most recent drawings of spoons and POM bottles are rendered in silver leaf, each gradually developing a unique patina over time. Impeccably crafted, his works appear at once foreign and familiar, the common objects of daily life reconfigured and reconsidered.
