  • "Drawing and working on paper is an essential part of my process. It is often a daily activity, mostly done in the morning when I first come into the studio. Sometimes, though, I will start drawing and not stop all day."

  • "My drawings are often experimental; they are part of a process of searching, exploring, inventing, and playing. Sometimes they are preliminary to paintings, but many times they are an end in themselves. In all of the works included in this exhibition I explore gesture and emotion."

  • "There is always a mystery to how a drawing will wrap up - I don't always know where it is going and I like to leave room for that. I don't always know what I am doing and the drawing has its own logic, even when I'm working with an image of someone famous like Dora Maar. It's not essential to make the drawing look like her, but to glean an aspect of her humanity in a wonky way. Mistakes and imperfections live within these drawings."
