Joachim Bandau: Solo Exhibition

June 28 - July 28, 2007

In the black watercolour paintings of Joachim Bandau time is a tangible dimension. Bandau writes “each new surface is a response to the previous one. These steps suggest improvisation: they surround and intensify the work.” These paintings are elegant studies of volume and presence – a reminder that beauty can be found in delicate, fragile movement and in the unexpected strength of ethereal forms. The interplay of these forms, built layer upon layer, provides an illusion of depth—receding forms like echoes. They resonate, delving deeper into the elusive nature of being and revealing Bandau’s engagement with philosophy, architecture and politics.

This is the first Canadian exhibition of Joachim Bandau, born in Köln, Germany in 1936. Exhibitions of his architectonic sculptures, installations and watercolour paintings include Documenta 6; the Drawing Centre in New York; Kunsthalle Nurnberg; Museum van Heedendagse Kunst, Antwerp and the Jewish Museum in Berlin.
