Katharine Harvey: Blueprint

September 3 - 26, 2020

Nicholas Metivier Gallery is pleased to announce Blueprint, a new series of paintings by Katharine Harvey. The exhibition will open in the west gallery and in our online Viewing Room on September 3rd and run until September 26th.

Blueprint is Katharine Harvey's latest body of work, inspired by her research for a forthcoming public art commission at 25 Richmond Street East in downtown Toronto. Harvey discovered historical blueprints for the original structure on the site, Shea's Victoria theatre, designed in 1908 by Charles James Reid. The theatre's relatively modest exterior was contrasted by its ornate interior decor, done in a Beaux-Arts style and adorned with curved lines and musically shaped motifs.

Harvey has applied her signature layering process to describe the distinctive patterns and shapes she discovered in the blueprints. While abstract, the works recall another era, reinterpreted with her luminous colour and expressive mark-making. Her large-scale glass installation at 25 Richmond Street East will be installed this September.
