Edward Burtynsky: Asian Quarries

November 6 - 27, 2004

"In the early 1990’s my fascination with the dramatic changes we impose on our landscape led me to photograph granite quarries in Vermont and marble quarries in Carrara, Italy. My aesthetic and philosophical sensibilities find affinity with the accumulated marks left by this industry in different cultures. These images reveal the collective impact we have on landscape. Over the years my creative reach has broadened to include other industrial sites, yet quarries continue o hold my attention. I went on to photograph quarries in Rajasthan, India, and most recently, in southeast China. This suite of images represents a culmination of the Asian component of the quarry project."
