Muses
January 30–February 22, 2014

Reception for the artist, Thursday, January 30, 6 – 8 PM

The Nicholas Metivier Gallery is pleased to announce Muses, an exhibition of new paintings by Toronto artist Katharine Harvey. The exhibition will open on January 30 and will be on view through February 22 with a reception for the artist on Thursday, January 30 from 6–8 pm.

Katharine Harvey is equally renowned for her paintings and sculptures. She moves fluidly between her two practices, one often influencing the other. Her works emphasize the physicality of the medium, whether it is the three-dimensional application of paint or the transformation of recycled plastic containers into awe inspiring objects. For over a decade, Harvey has explored the themes of water, motion, energy and light. Her interest lies in capturing the essence of an experience, “the glittering light or the motion of trees”.

This exhibition features Harvey’s latest series of paintings that are based on early photographs of inspirational people in her life, or as she refers to them, her muses. While for Harvey these people and places are real and specific, she is not interested in portraying them as such to the viewer. Instead, they are reimagined into a visual vocabulary of colourful, lozenge-shaped brushstrokes. Harvey’s titles allude to several different narratives including Golden Days and East Village. Each is identified with a unique colour palette that evokes a particular feeling or sensation.

Katharine Harvey has exhibited in Canada, the United States and Germany. Between 2009 and 2013, she was commissioned to make site-specific public installations of her sculptures Chandelier and Waterfall in Toronto, New York and Los Angeles. Harvey debuted her sculpture, Ferris Wheel (2013), at last year’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche. Her most recent commission, Gardiner Streams, is a three-story tall, 74 foot wide window that is currently being installed on the exterior of Quartz Condominium Towers, a development by Concord Adex in Toronto.
